I can use social media as a professional in various ways. I can connect with organizations of interest that can help me improve my teaching skills. I can follow various professional that I might think have special skills that I can learn from. I can also share my own classroom work and ideas and connect with other classes around the world. Things to consider is the authenticity of whomever I am following, Will I actually benefit from their skills? How much of my classroom do I share without sharing too much?

If I came across an inappropriate post from a student in my class, I would address it by directing it to the principal. In the past I have had students tell me, and show me inappropriate posts from other students. I have consulted with my principal and he has dealt with it. It's not that I am avoiding the issue, I thank the student for sharing and I let them know that we will help with the issue. But, my principal is trained to handle social media issues, bullying, etc., and I have full confidence that he will take care of it, and he has many times.

I think that is awesome that you are open to research what other people around the world are doing in their classrooms to improve your teaching practice. I have the same questions as you though, if taking what they do and applying it in my classroom if that will benefit me or my students. This week we had to explore twitter chats around our teaching content or DQ. I looked at ELL’s but after doing a bit more digging I came across AVID chats. I didn’t participate in these but I saw awesome resources shared by AVID teachers from around the country and even more cool was how they apply tech tools in these courses which has me super excited to hopefully try in my AVID class. All we got to do is take a risk Paula! Scary but we can do it!

Paula,
What are some of the resources in the iCARE that resonated with you around social media use? Do you think social media is appropriate for students to use in school for your particular grade?

Social media does allow us to really look into what others have said and learn from their experiences. With so many posts and accounts out there your questions are really important to consider. We can't follow everyone so we do need to make sure that what they're posting is useful to us and our students and not just something that sounds good.
My question for you is do you think in some instances it would be better to talk to that student yourself with your age group?

Paula, I think you brought up a great question, how much sharing of our classrooms is too much? I know at our school every child has their parent give permission to have pictures and videos taken because our admin puts a lot on social media. I think that it is important to have parents know if/when information about their child is being posted.

I also think passing it off to administration is a good idea when you are aware of something inappropriate.
